Tips for risk registers

Write risks as scenario + impact, not vague labels.

Assign a single owner per risk.

Update residual risk after mitigations land.

Review top risks in regular ops/security meetings.

Link each risk to concrete treatment actions.

A lightweight risk register

Rows for scenario, impact, likelihood, owner, and treatment beat a slide that says “we take security seriously”.

Keep it short enough to review. A 200-row graveyard is not a register.

Keep a risk register

  1. Add real scenarios

Stolen laptop, ransomware on backups, vendor lockout — not abstract “cyber risk”.

  2. Name an owner and a next action

Unowned rows never move. Dates without names also do not.

  3. Export and revisit

Update after incidents. Closed risks can stay as history, not clutter the active list.

Risk register FAQ

Is this GRC software?

No. It is a document starter. Heavy programs belong in a dedicated GRC tool.

Do risks upload to you?

No. Content stays in the browser until you copy it.

Quantitative or qualitative?

Start qualitative (H/M/L). Fake precision in a spreadsheet is worse than honest buckets.
