Tips for random strings
Match charset and length to the consuming system’s rules.
Use CSPRNG-backed generation for secrets and tokens.
Avoid ambiguous characters when humans must type the string.
Longer is better for API keys and nonces.
Do not reuse generated secrets across environments.
Random strings for tokens and samples
Processing stays in your browser — your input is not uploaded to our servers.
Unlike a password generator, this is a generic string: length and alphabet for API tokens, filenames, or test ids.
If the value must be a secret, store it like a password. Random looking is not the same as unguessable if the alphabet is tiny.
Generate a random string
Set length and alphabet
Hex-only strings are easy to paste into configs; mixed alphabets are denser.
Generate
Copy the exact output. Do not retype — transcription errors are common.
Use it once per purpose
A test id and a session secret should not be the same string.
Random string FAQ
Is this a UUID?
No. UUIDs have a fixed layout. This is an arbitrary-length random string.
Good enough for password reset tokens?
Only if the length and alphabet give enough entropy and you store hashes server-side. Prefer dedicated crypto APIs in production.
Local generation?
Yes. Nothing is uploaded.
